More from Monday:
Repercussions of the Ruiz Scandal
Given Ruiz’s position as a donor for Miami, questions arise as to how this will affect the hurricane’s NIL efforts.
While the Ruiz Scandal can lead to some trouble down the road for the hurricanes, it seems that from an immediate financial perspective, Miami will turn out fine.
This result is thanks to Florida modernizing its NIL laws in February, and the Canes Connection collective finally taking off on its own.
A year ago, most of Miami’s NIL was funded through Ruiz, however, this calendar year, 80% of Miami’s NIL deals are through Canes Connection.
Furthermore, for the athletes that were receiving NIL deals through LifeWallet, there should be no repercussions as they fulfilled their end of the deals and received payment.
Therefore, LifeWallets demolition as a company and the federal civil and criminal charges being investigated against it should not have any effect on the hurricane’s NIL. (link)
DI board plans for NIL protections
In the wake of federal bills being tossed around for NIL, the NCAA Division I Board of Directors has directed Council to develop proposals to improve the environment for student-athletes who are engaging in NIL.
During some stakeholder meetings at the end of July, feedback was solicited on a number of topics including transparency measures and the recruiting environment.
Among the proposals are rules that would:
Develop a registration process for NIL service providers and NIL entities.
Create a standardized contract for NIL deals
Establish disclosure requirements for student-athletes and/or NIL entities that could serve as a resource for student-athletes. (link)
