Kentucky college student athletes officially get NIL rights
Surrounded by coaches, athletes, lawmakers and university officials, Gov. Andy Beshear held a ceremony in the Capitol on Tuesday, in which he signed the bill that gives NIL rights for college SAs in Kentucky.
“We are here today to celebrate teamwork, cooperation, and the flawless execution of a game plan,” the governor said during the event. “Senate Bill 6 codifies rights I extended to student athletes last year. On June 24, I was proud to be the first governor in the nation to address this issue by signing an executive order. About a week later, the NCAA announced it would not block those steps.
“For decades, student athletes, unlike their peers, were barred from pursuing compensation associated with skills and talents. And unlike most of their non-athlete peers, student athletes are the main attraction in what is a multi-billion-dollar industry in this country.”
