NCAA President Mark Emmert on NIL regulation
NCAA President Mark Emmert said the new constitution is intended to provide greater flexibility for Division I and its conferences to determine what benefits athletes should have and define what pay-for-play means. But it yields no ground on one of the NCAA’s tenets — the school itself cannot pay the players directly (Sports Business Journal).
“It’s very clear to me and I think anybody involved that what’s going on in the NIL space is very different than the spirit of NIL when it was first discussed. A lot of people are concerned about it, and they’re disturbed by it, and anxious about what this is going to mean,” said NCAA President Mark Emmert.
The NCAA is still working with some schools — he wouldn’t name them, but Miami (Fla.), Oregon and BYU have been cited in news reports — to gather information on their NIL programs and make sure they’re operating within the state laws and interim NCAA guidelines.
