LMU Drops Three Men’s Teams And Three Women’s Teams
Loyola Marymount will cut men’s rowing, cross country, and track and field as well as women’s rowing, swimming, and track and field at the end of the 2023-24 season.
LMU’s Athletic Director, Craig Pintens, blames the lack of resources around NIL opportunities as a factor in the elimination of the specified teams.
Pintens said that the final decision on program cuts came “after carefully considering various internal and external factors, including the transformational changes impacting college athletics nationally, from the advent of name, image, and likeness, to changing transfer rules to pending rulings on student-athletes as employees, among others.”
LMU Swimmer Alena Sharp has started an online petition to save the soon-to-be-cut programs.
Philadelphia Partnership Establishes New NIL Hotline
Philadelphia City Council member Isiah Thomas and representatives from the Temple School of Law have partnered to introduce the NIL Youth Protection Bill.
The bill sets up a hotline for NIL education for student-athletes and their parents to call for free 24/7 legal advice.
Ken Jacobson, director of the Sports Law Program at Temple and manager of the hotline service, offers his specialties in dealing with NIL contracts.
The partnership aims to prevent student-athletes from entering improper NIL deals, which will in turn help the team they play for by mitigating eligibility concerns.
Michigan Will Maintain NIL Success Post-Harbaugh
Champions Circle, the Michigan-focused collective, launched the “Those Who Stay” campaign last off-season to keep players in school and away from the transfer portal.
This year’s campaign has reached $738,513 in donations, which will primarily be spread among returning players.
The collective was critical in maintaining talent for Michigan’s national championship this past season, bringing back players such as running back Blake Corum, offensive guard Trevor Keegan, and offensive lineman Zak Zinter.
New Head Coach Sherrone Moore is expected to aggressively recruit donor support.
