Major News
Jim Larranaga Resigns From Miami Basketball
Last Thursday, Larranaga announced his resignation from the Miami basketball program, citing exhaustion of the changing climate in college athletics and the constant struggle of juggling NIL in addition to running a program.
Larranaga mentioned that following the school’s first Final Four run ever in 2023, eight of the players decided they wanted to transfer simply because they had better opportunities to make money somewhere else.
Larranaga is now joining the list of retired coaches who are calling for change in the college athletics landscape. Lack of transparency surrounding NIL has been a sticking point for many coaches.

NIL at the Arizona Bowl
Snoop Dogg sponsored this year’s Arizona Bowl, becoming one of the first bowl games to offer every player on each team an NIL opportunity.
The bowl can’t pay players just for playing in the bowl, but both teams participated in football clinics on Friday and will get paid for their services.
The bowl is classified as a 501(c)(3), so all revenue went to charity.
Snoop Dogg sought to get back to the roots of college football, focusing on “the colleges, the players and the competition, the community, the fan experience and the pageantry.”

Diego Pavia’s Lawsuit Applies to Other Athletes
Last week, Diego Pavia, the quarterback for Vanderbilt, won his lawsuit against the NCAA.
The temporary injunction will allow Pavia to play an extra year of football, which could equal almost a million dollars in NIL money.
Pavia cited antitrust violations against the NCAA, arguing that their eligibility rules violated the freedom for "interstate trade".
Although Pavia stuck his foot out and initiated his personal lawsuit against the NCAA, the organization has granted another year of eligibility for all those that meet the requirements across all NCAA sports.
